About Our Council and Our Order

Council 1349, is the mother council of San Diego, hence our name San Diego Mother Council 1349 (although we simply refer to the Council informally as San Diego Council). We were Chartered June 8, 1908. To establish our Council, Brother Knights came to San Diego from Los Angeles on the train, arriving at the Santa Fe Station. San Diego members attended their 1st, 2nd and 3rd degrees and thus the San Diego Council 1349, began. On June 8, 2008, we celebrated our 100 year anniversary and that date was named Knights of Columbus Day by the Mayor of San Diego.

We currently meet at the Columbus Club at 4425 Home Avenue, San Diego, CA 92105, www.columbusclubsandiego.com. Council Officer meetings are held at the Columbus Club at 6:30 PM. on the second Wednesday of each month, followed by Council Business meetings at 7:30 PM. We welcome any Brother Knight to attend our meetings after presenting his membership card to our Worthy Warden at the door.

More About What We Do

KofC SaluteFrom the moment of our founding in 1882, charity has been the first principle of the Knights of Columbus. We are men of faith and men of action. Last year alone, in addition to raising and donating more than $151 million to charitable needs and projects, Knights volunteered more than 69 million hours of their time to charitable causes. We undertake these acts of charity because we see those in need through the eyes of faith. Moreover, in the Knights of Columbus, we approach these acts of charity together. Pope Benedict XVI calls this the “practice of love...as a community.” Our charitable activities encompass an almost infinite variety of local, national and international projects. From international charitable partnerships with the Special Olympics, the Global Wheelchair Mission and Habitat for Humanity to our own Food for Families and Coats for Kids projects and other purely local charities, the opportunity to work together with fellow Knights and their families is virtually endless.

The Knights’ annual Survey of Fraternal Activity for the year ending Dec. 31, 2009, indicated that, despite a soft economy, total charitable contributions reached $151,105,867 – exceeding the previous year’s total by more than $1 million.

The figure includes $34,627,530 donated by the Supreme Council, and $116,477,971 in contributions from state and local councils assemblies and Squires circles.

The survey also indicated that the quantity of volunteer service hours to charitable causes by Knights grew to 69,251,926 – an increase of 468,291 hours compared to 2009. There were more than 413,000 Knights of Columbus blood donations during the year and, among the most common service programs, Habitat for Humanity received 227,900 K of C volunteer hours.  Cumulative figures show that during the past decade, the Knights of Columbus has donated more than $1.367 billion to charity, and provided nearly 640 million hours of volunteer service in support of charitable initiatives. Founding of the Knights

On March 29, the Connecticut legislature granted a charter to the Knights of Columbus, formally establishing it as a legal corporation. The Order’s principles in 1882 were "Charity" and "Unity." The concepts of "Fraternity" and "Patriotism" were added later. Each of these ideals played a major role in ceremonials from the beginning. The Columbus-linked themes, says historian Christopher J. Kauffman, "reverberated with pride in the American promise of liberty, equality and opportunity."
